Richting Whitehorse, Canada.

Vanuit Haines met de ferry naar Skagway. Een tochtje van anderhalf uur. De parkeerplaats bij de ferry staat vol. Vooral met hele grote campers. De onze speelt de rol van klein duimpje. De ferry ziet er niet heel groot uit. Door de bemanning wordt gepast en gemeten. Het komt er echt op dertig centimeter op aan of het gaat lukken ze allemaal aan boord te krijgen. Wij hebben snel in de gaten dat wij het opvul autootje worden. Alternatief, wij blijven nog een nachtje staan. Maar het lukt! Wij worden de laatste auto. Overdwars geplaatst na tig keren heen en weer gedraai. Last in- First out. Stomverbaasd staan wij te kijken hoe alles net past. Je moet goed zoeken om een ruimte te vinden om naar het dek te komen.

From Haines we took the ferry to Skagway. An one and a half hour trip. The parking lot of the ferry is full. Specially with these huge American rigs. Ours looks like a baby between them. The ferry doesn't look very big. The crew is doing a lot of measuring to get everybody on board to make it work. As it seems, we are going to be the one to fill up the last little hole. If not, we stay another night. But it works out right. We are the last one to embark. After a lot of forwards and backwards turns we stands queer on the boat. Last in- First out! Incredible how they managed to get all in. You have to look for a place to squeeze through to get to the deck.

In Skagway waren alle twee de campgrounds vol en werden wij naar de overflow campground gestuurd. Daarover later. Het was maar voor een nacht en wij wilden zo wie zo niet naar het stadje. Te toeristisch en wij hadden het zes jaar geleden uitgebreid gezien 

In Skagway both two campgrounds where full and we were send to the overflow campground. Tell you about that later. It was just for the night and didn't want to go to the city anyway. Too many tourists.

De volgende dag reden wij langs de Yukon rivier naar het noorden. De Yukon stroomde vroeger naar het zuiden en kwam bij Skagway in zee. Een grote aardverschuiving blokkeerde de vallei waardoor de rivier stroomde en moest een nieuwe weg zoeken. Eerst naar het noorden en halverwege Alaska gaat hij richting westen om in de Beringzee uit te monden. Hier is hij nog smal, in midden Alaska honderden meters breed. De weg is prachtig, bijna geen verkeer en mooie vergezichten.

 Next day we drove on along the Yukon river to the north.The Yukon used to flow to the south and reached the ocean at Skagway. Due to a huge landslide long ago, the valley was blocked and the river had to find a new way to reach the ocean. It now flows to the north and turns halfway Alaska to the west to end up in the Beringsea. Here he is rather small, halfway he can be hundreds of meters wide. The road is nice , hardly any traffic and beautiful views.

Wij stoppen in Carcross, de toeristentrein van Skagway is net aangekomen. In zes jaar zie je het stadje veranderen in een atractiepark. Jammer maar iedereen wil natuurlijk hun deel van de toeristen industrie. Zelfs de kerk op de foto van zes jaar geleden moest eraan geloven en is naar de andere kant van de straat verhuisd.

We stopped at Carcross, the tourist train from Skagway just arrived. In six years time this little town is transferred into a tourist atractionpark. It is pity but everybody likes to have their share in the tourist industry. Even the church on the picture of six years ago had to move to the other side of the road.

Wij liepen even rond en aten ons tweede ijsje deze zomer. Alles is  hier BIG, ook een bolletje ijs!

We walked around and had our second ice-cream during this trip. Everything is BIG in the States, even a scoop of ice-cream!

Carcross ligt tussen twee meren met prachtige zandstranden. Overblijfsel uit de laatste IJstijd.

 Carcross is situated between two lakes with beautiful sandy beaches. Result of the Ice Age.

Op het laatste stuk reden wij langs het Rainbow Lake. De verschillende structuren van de bodem zorgen voor deze mooie kleurenschakering

On the last part of the journey, we drove past Rainbow Lake. The different structures of the soil are the cause of this beautiful color scheme.
