The Ring of Fire

Aan de westkant van Cook Island zie je vanuit Kenai Mt. Redoubt. Een van de vijf vulkanen die de noordelijke rand van de North Pacific Ring of Fire vormen die zich rond de  Grote Oceaan bevindt. Daar waar de tectonische platen op, onder en over elkaar schuiven bevinden zich vulkanen en komen er veel aardbevingen voor. Langs de Cook Inlet kan je bij helder weer vijf van deze vulkanen zien. Laat het nu op de dag dat wij verder naar het zuiden richting Homer rijden stralend weer zijn! Op de een of andere manier fascineren mij deze vulkanen. Kan er uren naar kijken. Twee van hen zijn nog redelijk actief en soms zie je er een stoompluim bij hangen.                          On the west side of Cook Inlet you can see from the shore in Kenai Mt. Redoubt. It has to be a clear day. It is one of the five vulcano's that form the northern side of the North Pacific Ring of Fire.  Where the tectonic plates hit each other you will find the vulcanos and many earthquakes take place. Along the coast of the Cook Inlet you will see five of them on a clear day. When we drive down towards Homer we had this fantastic blue sky day! I'm fascinated by these vulkanos, can watch them all day. Two of them are relatively active, you sometimes see steam plumes around the top of them.                  

Mt. Reboubt was nog actief in 1990 en voor het laatst in 2009. Ook in Mt. Augustine  rommelt het nog. In Homer beeft de grond elke dag een beetje en dat is goed. Zo bouwt er zich geen grote spanning op die zich opeens ontlaat. Mt. Augustine is mijn favoriet. Een vulkaan zoals een vulkaan er uit moet zien. Gelukkig kon ik hem op het laatst op de foto krijgen.                                                       Mt. Augustine, Mt. Redoubt, Mt. Iliamna.          

 Mt. Redoubt was still active in 1990 and 2009. In Mt. Augustine it is still restless. Llittle earthquakes take place every day in Homer. You don't notice them. Little earthquakes on a regular basis means that there is no tension building up in the earth so that seems ok. Mt. Augustine is my favorite, a real vulcano, luckily I was able to take a picture of her.
